HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) – A North Carolina man admitted to killing his girlfriend at a motel in the Loris area before he headed to trial. William Perritt pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter in 19-year-old Brooke Akins’ death on Tuesday. He was initially charged with murder in the case. He entered an Alford plea before his trial was set to start on Monday, May 12. An Alford plea is when the defendant does not admit guilt, but acknowledges there is enough evidence to convict him.

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. (WMBF) - A group of state senators is racing against the clock to get a piece of legislation passed that could help catch child predators. Senator Greg Hembree, representing Horry County, is among a group of sponsors hoping to pass an administrative subpoena bill, which would make it easier for prosecutors to get information about potential online child predators. “If you’re interested in government efficiency, you should be in favor of this bill,” said Hembree.

COLUMBIA, S.C. (WMBF) - A bill in the South Carolina Senate would further define and make what’s known as “coercive control” a crime in the state. S. 588, filed Tuesday by Republican Sen. Stephen Goldfinch, would create the offense of “coercive control over another person” in South Carolina.
