Garden Road residents heard plans to expand a California Keg & Liquor store with two offices and two take-out restaurants at a neighborhood meeting Tuesday at Poway City Council Chambers. Architect Kit Ashley shared information about the project on behalf of the liquor store’s owner Roben Mansur. The meeting was called as part of the minor development review process Mansur is going through to get approval to demolish a residence on the property at the corner of Garden Road and Claire Drive.

Chabad of Poway will host a pre-release screening of the film, “Guns & Moses,” which tells the story of small-town rabbi Mo Zaltzman, who becomes an unlikely gunfighter after a violent attack on his community. The screening, which is open to the public, will be at 12:30 p.m. Sunday, June 8 at the synagogue, 16934 Chabad Way. Salvador Litvak, the director and co-writer with his wife, Nina, said he was inspired to write “Guns & Moses” after the April 27, 2019 shooting at Chabad of Poway.

Ramona High School’s NJROTC cadets who have been winning awards throughout the school year will celebrate their success on Sunday, June 1. The Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corp Awards Night is set for 4 p.m. in the high school’s Performing Arts Wing, 1401 Hanson Lane. Admission is free and the event will conclude with a potluck dinner.

Gabriel Shuster and Meno Nassi, both 12, are getting a lot of attention for their “Floodictor” device, which monitors flooding in a house or other building. In fact, the two seventh-graders at San Diego Jewish Academy in Carmel Valley are taking their project to the international CADENA Initiative USA Competition online on Sunday, June 1. They won the national award last month after beating out students from New York, Washington, D.C. and Miami.

The Poway Neighborhood Emergency Corps and Poway Fire Safe Council have received a $7,000 SAFE grant from The San Diego Regional Fire Foundation to support wildfire education and preparedness programs in the community. The funds awarded May 19 will help strengthen Poway’s wildfire resilience by supporting the ongoing initiatives of the Poway Neighborhood Emergency Corps (PNEC), said the organization’s President Terri Sorensen.
