Just seven games in, No. 20 Texas A&M men’s basketball’s schedule has been filled with plenty of early tests. From a season-opening upset loss to UCF and a close drop to Oregon and wins over then-ranked Ohio State and No. 21 Creighton, coach Buzz Williams has had his hands full thus far. For the team’s last game in the Players Era Festival for fifth place on Saturday, the Rutgers Scarlet Knights presented a new challenge on the hardwood that the Aggies ultimately overcame for a 81-77 victory.

At long last, the final two college football games have arrived, and the mad dash to make it into the new 12-team College Football Playoff had contenders adding late blemishes to their records. No. 9 Ole Miss, No. 5 Indiana, No. 14 BYU and No. 16 Colorado’s playoff chances all took a massive hit after losses on Saturday. Four hours and four overtimes later, add No. 15 Texas A&M to the list.

Though No. 23 Texas A&M dropped its opener to UCF, it came back and rattled off three-straight wins, including one against its first ranked opponent of the season, then-No. 21 Ohio State. With Southern University coming into town, a fourth-straight victory was all but penciled in. However, early on the 1-3 Southwestern Athletic Conference squad came out and punched the Aggies in the mouth — hard. Though the final score was 71-54, a Southern upset brewed in the first half.

Through nine games, the Top 25 has seen a variety of teams seeping in and being kicked out while playoff-contending teams shuffle between rankings themselves. Texas A&M is no exception, from sneaking into the Top 25 in Week 3 to jumping all the way to No. 10 in Week 10. However, after a tough road loss to the on-fire South Carolina Gamecocks, the Aggies now sit as the 15th-best team in the nation.
