Michigan has more federal-aid-eligible roads in “good” condition than any time in the last two decades. In 2024, about 28% of the state’s primary road system was in good condition, up from 26% in 2023 and 21% in 2019, according to a new report from the Michigan Transportation Asset Management Council (TAMC).

Michiganders may want to preview the upcoming road construction schedule as they plan for the week. More than 80 road projects will begin between Sunday, May 11, and Saturday, May 17, requiring various levels of closures on the state’s primary roads, according to the Michigan Department of Transportation (MDOT). Drivers should be aware of closures on I-75 in Monroe and Wayne counties, U.S. 131 in Kalamazoo County, I-94 in Washtenaw County, and I-96 in Kent County.

No Michigan county came close to competing with Wayne County in 2024 on-premise liquor sales. The state’s most-populous county, home to the city of Detroit, accounted for the top seven bars, including Little Caesars Arena -- the only venue with more than $1 million in liquor sales. However, there were standouts in other parts of the state, including The B.O.B in Kent County, Harper’s Restaurant and Brewpub in Ingham County, and Last Word in Washtenaw County.

Little Caesars Arena was Michigan’s top on-premises location for total liquor sales in 2024, marking a third consecutive year with that title. Home of the Detroit Red Wings, Detroit Pistons and other entertainment events, LCA led all bars with $1.03 million of distilled spirits purchased from the state to resell to its customers. Michigan is a “control state” for liquor, meaning The Michigan Liquor Control Commission is the sole seller for all distilled spirts in the state.

Oakland County drivers who travel west on I-696 may want to seek a new route in the short term. The westbound highway between I-75 and M-10 will be completely shut down for 10 days, beginning Friday evening, May 9. Drivers will be detoured off the highway at I-75 (Exit 18) and instructed to take southbound I-75 to westbound Davison Freeway (M-8), to northbound M-10, before returning to I-696. Demolition of the Church Street plaza bridge is what’s requiring the significant highway closure.

How?! Can’t imagine the NHL can allow that to go unpenalized and claim to care about player safety. Reckless.

Not expecting any supplemental discipline for #Canes Jalen Chatfield from @NHLPlayerSafety for his takedown of #allcaps Connor McMichael during their fight on Wednesday night.
