On Thursday, workers of the ruling Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) were led by Punjab Cabinet minister Harjot Bains in staging a dharna outside Sutlej Sadan, the BBMB guesthouse. They aimed to stop Tripathi from releasing water to Haryana, and locked him inside the rest house. He was later ‘rescued’ in a police vehicle and moved out.

The Punjab government had readied 10,800 beds in secondary level and 1,151 in tertiary care hospitals keeping in mind the military standoff between India and Pakistan. The move was undertaken much before India and Pakistan agreed to an immediate ceasefire including all military actions on land, air and sea, effective 5pm, Saturday. Carrying out an an extensive exercise, the government had earmarked 2,638 beds at district and sub division hospitals and block level facilities for emergency response.

THE PUNJAB government Friday cleared a proposal to procure an anti-drone system at an outlay of Rs 51.41 crore to be deployed at state’s border with Pakistan the move coming at a time when the neighbouring country has been unleashing a swarm of drones to target Indian military facilities, probe air defence systems and gather intelligence at multiple locations. The decision was taken in an emergency meeting of the Council of Ministers chaired by Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann.

“If any NRI wants to donate money for the development of the villages, we will soon announce an account number. He can deposit the money in the account. If any NRI wants the money only to be spent in his native village, then we will do that,” said Mann. The development comes at a time when Punjab has been facing a funds crunch, with freebies bleeding the state exchequer dry. The government has not been able to spend much on the development of the state either.
