It’s that time of year where flocks of college and university students descend on the streets of Aberdeen, injecting a new lease of life into the Granite Mile (and beyond). A host of events are taking place in the city in the coming weeks, from comedy, games and movie nights to picnics and a secondhand market. For local bars, pubs and nightclubs, Freshers’ Week – which is now also being dubbed as ‘Welcome Week’ – is one of the busiest periods of the year.

Admit it, we all have a restaurant that we constantly vow to ourselves we’ll visit. But at the end of the day, a lot of us are creatures of habit. It becomes second nature to book a table at the spot that serves the fiery curry you’ve had time and time again because it always puts a smile on your face, or has at least one thing on the menu that you know each family member enjoys. Netherton Farm has been Andrew Geddes’ stomping ground for more than five decades (and counting). From a young age, the now 52-year-old worked alongside his dad Donald with cattle, crops and, more recently, sheep. The former has “always been his main passion.” Andrew’s wife of 19 years, Claire, on the other hand, explained that her upbringing was quite the opposite. “I am not from a farming background.

February 2024 marked the launch of Café Oregano, an inviting and Instagrammable coffee shop located at the heart of Aberdeen. I remember reading about the business’ opening – which was revealed by The P&J – and how it was a dream come true for Mahmud Sirazudullah and his wife Mimi Nahid. They wanted to bring a taste of Asia to the Granite City with healthy snacks and Indian spiced tea. The Holburn Street café and their story stuck with me.
