    Heavy rains that drenched the New Orleans metro area and flooded streets across the city hit a little too close for comfort this week, as The New Orleans Jazz and Heritage Festival kicks off Thursday. But while some scattered showers could continue through much of the week, National Weather Service meteorologist Phil Grigsby said the first weekend of 2025 Jazz Fest is not likely to be a washout.     Heavy rains soaked the New Orleans metro area Monday, overwhelming local drainage systems, filling roadways with water and knocking out power to a few thousand residents. Though the floodwaters were starting to drain in some areas by 7:30 p.m., flash flooding caused road closures and car accidents across the city and in Jefferson and St. Bernard parishes. According to a statement posted to its now defunct website, the Southern Regional Climate Center is one of four such centers across the U.S. that were abruptly shuttered after lapses in funding from the U.S. Department of Commerce through the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.

    An annual national conference on the evolving threat of hurricanes kicked off in New Orleans on Monday, but without the usual presence of experts from the federal government due to cost-saving measures put in place by President Donald Trump's administration. The conference is also taking place with the White House reportedly planning major cuts to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, which oversees the nation’s hurricane and weather forecasting services.

    A motorcyclist was killed in a crash on Almonaster Avenue in New Orleans East late Saturday night, according to the New Orleans Police Department. Police said the man was riding south on the Almonaster overpass near Jourdan Road when he failed to complete a right turn and hit a concrete barrier. The crash was reported to police just after 10 p.m. and paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene. Police did not immediately release more information.
