A fast-growing fire forced evacuations Sunday afternoon near Bishop, an Eastern Sierra city that is a popular springboard for High Sierra hikers and skiers. The Silver Fire, measured at 150 acres mid-afternoon Sunday and spreading rapidly toward the north and east, caused evacuations in desert communities in both Inyo and Mono counties. Cal Fire was at the scene, working with Bishop authorities, and has requesting more resources.

A wildfire forced evacuations Sunday afternoon near Bishop (Inyo County), an Eastern Sierra city that is a popular springboard for High Sierra hikers and skiers. The Silver Fire, which sparked shortly after 2 p.m. Sunday, was measured at 1,589 acres Monday evening and was 47% contained. The blaze forced evacuations in desert communities in Inyo and Mono counties Sunday as it spread rapidly toward the north and east.

After a day’s respite from bad air, air quality deteriorated again Tuesday in much of the Bay Area. As of 9:50 a.m. on Tuesday, air quality in San Francisco, Marin, Petaluma and the Walnut Creek area hovered in the “unhealthy for sensitive groups” category – meaning that children, seniors and people with medical challenges should consider avoiding prolonged outdoor exertion. Berkeley, Oakland and the Peninsula had generally moderate air quality.

A tractor-trailer full of chickpeas caught fire in Death Valley National Park this month - the latest vehicle fire linked to overheating brakes in the hottest place on Earth. The truck was hauling 44,000 pounds of dried chickpeas, the National Park Service said. A towing service cleaned up stray chickpeas that remained after the fire and took away the wreckage in the Nov. 21 incident.
