With construction underway of the highly anticipated pedestrian bridge that will connect West Ashley to the peninsula across the Ashley River, drivers can expect some nighttime lane closures this week. City officials, in collaboration with the S.C. Department of Transportation, plan to close a half-mile of U.S. Highway 17 northbound — a section that spans the river from Albemarle Road in West Ashley to the exit ramp for Lockwood Boulevard downtown — from 9 p.m. Feb. 26 through 6 a.m. Feb 27.

The smell of leather and halters lingers through the aisles as a staffer gently sweeps the concrete floors. Only mid-morning daylight illuminates the way.
