The county's greenbelt program allocates funds from the transportation sales tax to urban, rural and unincorporated areas, providing an avenue to use public funds for land conservation. The amount of money each municipality receives each year is based on population size, and the remaining balance rolls over each year.

NORTH CHARLESTON — Plans for large scale housing developments at a shopping center on Ashley Phosphate Road that has struggled to keep businesses alive have gone back to the drawing board after nearby residents voiced concerns. Woodlock Capital, a Charleston-based real estate firm, purchased the Festival Centre retail property in September 2024 for $21.75 million, The Post and Courier previously reported.

NORTH CHARLESTON — Voters in districts 3 and 5 elected Stephanie Ganaway-Pasley and Chris Emde in a special election on May 27, filling the two seats left vacant after a federal corruption probe. Roughly 1,470 ballots out of 13,055 registered voters between the two districts were cast in the special election the day following Memorial Day, resulting in a 11 percent voter turnout, unofficial results show.
