The Observer is a daily newspaper, both in print and online, created by students for the Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s communities. Established in 1966 by Notre Dame students, it is supported through advertising income and subscription fees from students at both universities. The Observer maintains its editorial independence from the administrations of Notre Dame and Saint Mary’s.

    As my time draws near to leave Notre Dame and my walks around campus grow more frequent, I am forever grateful for what this University has imparted to me. My worldview has been shaped by this school and what it calls us to be. I am a Democrat because of my time at Notre Dame and the ideal of being a "force for good."At Notre Dame, these are more than words. Rather, this challenge to be a force for good is one that was enshrined into our University’s very fiber at the beginning.

    Being a transfer student feels a lot like being a freshman. Both come with a lot of pressure to fit in, to make friends and to prove that you made the right choice. To achieve these goals, throughout my first semester, I followed the age-old advice: never turn down an invitation. If someone asked me to study, I went; if a club was hosting a party, I RSVP’d yes.

Few know of its existence, but the little lamp it houses can be seen for miles across D.C. and, when lit, signifies that Congress is in session. This past Monday, I watched the lantern shine throughout the night from the sidewalk in front of my hotel.

    I have always thought that the spring semester feels much harder than the fall. My friends and I have come up with a lot of theories — we like to overload in the spring, we’re preparing to move out, we plan spring break vacations and we finalize summer plans. While the fall feels like living a new beginning, the spring is a time for planning for the future. The highlight of this planning, of course, is the summer internship (or job or class or study abroad or grad school prep or all of the above).
