(WIVB) — Students and faculty at University at Buffalo, among others, are filing a lawsuit against over 40 police officers, the City of Buffalo, and the president of UB alleging a “violent dispersal” of a pro-Palestine protest last May. On May 1, 2024, more than 50 students gathered in front of Hochstetter Hall for a peaceful protest against the war in Gaza including prayer, speeches and chants, according to the plaintiffs.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — Michael Gainer is no longer in the primary race for Buffalo mayor after fraud was discovered by a state supreme court judge on Monday, according to court documents obtained by WIVB News 4. State Senator Sean Ryan, who was endorsed by the Erie County Democratic Committee for Buffalo Mayor, filed an order alleging fraud. The court filing stated Gainer admitted to committing fraud in his petition for mayor. The petition was subsequently ruled invalid.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The federal trial of the man who killed 10 people in a racist mass shooting in 2022 could end up being pushed to a later date. Jury selection is currently scheduled for January 5, 2026, but the court says it’s not “set in stone.” In court documents obtained by WIVB News 4, the defense argues if jury selection commences in January, penalty phase deliberations would occur around the same time as the anniversary of the shooting.

(WIVB) — A landlord was arrested Thursday after failing to appear in housing court for allegedly neglecting his properties, including an Allentown building across the street from where two prominent artists were found dead last month, Acting Buffalo Mayor Chris Scanlon announced. Charles Dobucki, the landlord at 2 St. Louis Place, was arrested Thursday morning at an auto shop on Delaware Avenue.

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) — The legal battle over Albert the alligator continues. The state Department of Environmental Conservation is appealing a judge’s decision ordering the department to review Tony Cavallaro’s application to keep his pet alligator in his Hamburg home. The judge ruled last month if the DEC fails to act in thirty days, Albert must be returned to his owner. Cavallaro kept Albert in his Hamburg home for decades.
