A recent announcement from the Kansas City Royals that it had acquired through an affiliate the mortgage of a keenly-watched property in central Overland Park raises some questions about the past and future of the mixed-use campus. Aspiria sits between 115th and 119th Streets along Nall Avenue, right on the border of Overland Park and Leawood.

A mixed-use project featuring several hundred apartments proposed in southern Overland Park can go ahead, but it looks a little different than originally planned. Located near the southeastern corner of 159th Street and Metcalf Avenue, the project originally proposed more than 930 multifamily units, some civic space for community gathering and more than 20,000 square feet of commercial space.

Southwind Management, a Kansas City-based home services firm, has withdrawn its plans to make the old Waddell & Reed office building its new headquarters. The firm has removed its special use application, which centered on plans to park about 50 of its trucks and commercial vehicles in the parking lot for a 10-year term. Previously, the Overland Park Planning Commission also recommended denial of the application, and it was headed to the Overland Park City Council for consideration on Monday.

Longtime community leader and member of the Overland Park City Council, Jim Kite, will not seek another term. First elected in 2007, Kite represents Ward 3, the central portion of the city, primarily located between 103rd Street and 119th Street. Over his career on the council, Kite chaired city council focus area committees and has also served as council president.
