Chris Gonzalez meets a lot of veterans, but the former detention officer in Guantanamo Bay won’t soon forget the one who used to live out here. “He had no job, no home, no nothing,” Gonzalez said. Michael Harrahil, an aircraft mechanic, had fallen on hard times. He’d gotten divorced, lost his job and spent a year living on the streets.

SPRINGFIELD TOWNSHIP, Ohio — The wheelchair Miara Miles once used is tucked away in her garage. It takes her a second to figure out how to open it, because she hasn’t used it for a while. But it still brings back memories. "I remember being very scared," Miles said. "I was very confused, because I just didn’t really understand what was happening."As a child, Miles was diagnosed with a brain tumor that caused epilepsy. In 2020, she had a violent seizure and lost her ability to walk.

TATE TOWNSHIP, Ohio — Bill Bick tries to stand up from his couch. He grabs his cane, and his wife of 74 years grabs his arm. Janet Bick had told him to stand up earlier. She wanted to look at old pictures in their dining room. Now, she tells him to sit back down. “We’ll bring the pictures to you,” Janet said. She is 93. Bill is 101. “They are a treasure,” said Judi Adams, president of the Bethel Historical Society and Museum. And you couldn’t tell the story of Bethel and Tate Township without them.

CINCINNATI — It looks like the land of misfit toys. On the second floor of a warehouse in Lower Price Hill, there’s a pallet box full of vacuum cleaners. There are stacks of microwaves and TVs. Rows and rows and rows of appliances people don’t want anymore. "Jump right in," said Jerome Wilson, reuse manager at Cincinnati Recycling & Reuse Hub. "Grab a toaster."Wilson leads what he calls the tinker team, a group of volunteers trying to extend the life of products that come into the organization.

CINCINNATI — Robert White is standing on the track at College Hill's rec center. He leans on a railing overlooking the gymnasium below him. Outside, the parking lot is full. In the gym, dozens of people are dancing. White can't help but dance, too. First, he taps his feet. Then, his neck seems to roll from one shoulder to the other. Then, he does it again. And again. “No matter where I am,” White said, “I’m always dancing.”Sometimes, he says he wakes up at 3 a.m., gets out of bed and starts dancing.
