CINCINNATI — Devin Miller mops the floor in his dad’s kitchen. Then, he washes the dishes. Above his head, there's a hole in the ceiling the size of suitcase. When Miller walks into the dining room, he points to another hole on the other side of the room. Then, he shows me a baby picture on the wall. “This is the same house I grew up in,” Miller said. Standing a few feet from severe water damage, he shows his 77-year-old father a few pictures from his time in the Navy.

CINCINNATI — The floodwaters have long since receded, but Mike Bricker still runs the fans. The industrial kind. And he runs them all day. It’s been almost a month since floods forced his baseball and softball training facility to close, but you can still see the mud splatter on its windows. About memories that include his dad dying from an overdose. He believes this is all behind him.

HAMILTON, Ohio — Nicole Hibbard picks up her 8-month-old daughter and smiles. In her small bedroom, she turns on Mickey Mouse. The two stand by her bed and laugh. It's a small moment, but its importance is something Hibbard can't quite put into words. Because it's something she never thought would happen. Last year, Hibbard was arrested for stealing cars while pregnant and using drugs.

CINCINNATI — Jamie Huynh gets her love of food from her mom. Still, she never thought she'd be here. Here is a kitchen at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, where she pulls a sirloin out of the oven and helps another student make crostinis. Growing up, when her mom asked her to come into the kitchen to learn her family recipes, Huynh would run away and play. “This is not what I planned to do after high school,” Huynh said.
