HAMILTON, Ohio — Nicole Hibbard picks up her 8-month-old daughter and smiles. In her small bedroom, she turns on Mickey Mouse. The two stand by her bed and laugh. It's a small moment, but its importance is something Hibbard can't quite put into words. Because it's something she never thought would happen. Last year, Hibbard was arrested for stealing cars while pregnant and using drugs.

CINCINNATI — Jamie Huynh gets her love of food from her mom. Still, she never thought she'd be here. Here is a kitchen at Cincinnati State Technical and Community College, where she pulls a sirloin out of the oven and helps another student make crostinis. Growing up, when her mom asked her to come into the kitchen to learn her family recipes, Huynh would run away and play. “This is not what I planned to do after high school,” Huynh said.

VEVAY, Ind. — Russ Bragg bends over and picks up a log. He walks down to the Ohio River banks and tosses it into a pile. The pile is growing. Bragg says it's all part of the trash and debris left over from flooding in early April. Flooding that damaged homes and communities all over the Tri-State.

That’s how she described feeling when she came back on Thursday — even though she had to borrow boots from her boss to get upstairs. “At least I have my home back,” Slayback said. Born and raised in Aurora, she works as a bartender at the Fraternal Order of Eagles.

CINCINNATI — Jack Stenger holds up his binoculars. He doesn’t go many places without them. Then, before he can finish a sentence, he interrupts himself and points up in the air. He claps when he sees a vulture, then puts the binoculars back up to his eyes. “Oh, there’s a different one for you,” Stenger said. “A double-crested cormorant.”That’s a water bird with a hooked bill, in case you don't have the same encyclopedic knowledge of birds.
