One of my most poignant final memories of my grandma before she passed away was sitting in her living room with her and other family members and taking turns tossing a ball into a wastebasket. Surrounded by her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, her eyes lit up as she sank her armchair shot from 10 feet away. At 97 years old, the once-talented tennis player was able to give her youngest family members a glimpse of her youth and athleticism.

Adho Mukha Svanasana — known as downward-facing dog or, simply, down dog in the West — is a foundational asana, or yoga pose. Hands and feet on the mat, with hips high in the air, the inverted V shape is a highly recognizable posture. You’re likely to encounter it during yoga classes, where it is sometimes used as a transitional pose and resting posture, as well as during nonyogic training.

One of my absolute favorite pastimes is hiking. Not only is it a great workout, training legs, core, heart, lungs, and mind, but hiking has also offered me numerous opportunities to see the world. I’ve hiked while visiting far-flung locales — Peru, Iceland, Nicaragua, Italy, Greece, and Jordan — and explored my own “backyard” while living in New Jersey, California, the D.C. area, and now, Minnesota.

The summit of Vermont’s Mount Philo, with its views of the sparkling Lake Champlain, is one of the most popular outdoor destinations in the state for a reason: Its short, roughly three-quarter-mile ascent is relatively easy — an accessible climb for hikers, picnickers, families with young children, and nature enthusiasts of all types. Mount Philo was an ideal location for one of my early attempts at rucking — walking with weight, usually in the form of a pack known as a rucksack.
