    MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Police arrested a man after intentionally tampering with gas valves, according to officials with the Maryville Police Department. Officers responded after a suspect was seen running away from a natural gas connection near Celtic Drive. He was suspected of opening valves to the gas line and arrested. “There was a brief closure of the northbound lanes 129 bypass in an abundance of caution while responders entered the facility to shut off the valves,” Maryville officials said.

    MARYVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Back in April, Josh Sullivan was kidnapped while doing mission work in South Africa. Sullivan was based at the Baptist church since 2018 with his family. A multi-agency task force in country began investigating the kidnapping and found where Sullivan was being held. While rescuing him, three suspects were shot. No other injuries were reported, including Sullivan. WVLT’s Ted Hall sat down with him for the first time since he came back.

    KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - A Knox County man was arrested on Wednesday on child abuse charges, according to officials with the Knox County Sheriff’s Office. Gilbert was charged with aggravated child abuse of a child 8 years old and under and for violating the Sex Offender Registry. The aggravated child abuse charge is in violation of Haley’s Law.     OLIVER SPRINGS, Tenn. (WVLT) - A man was arrested Thursday after an ongoing search. Officials with the Oliver Springs Police Department said they got a tip about a wanted suspect being at a home on Railroad Avenue. The suspect ran from officers and tried to hide in a thick area of bamboo. Officers did capture and arrest him. He was wanted on three counts of violation of probation stemming from an assault and kidnapping case from 2019.

    KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - On Thursday, Robert Prevost was elected as the next pope. Prevost was born in Chicago and is the first US citizen to head up the Catholic Church. He was a missionary in Peru before taking over that diocese. Pope Francis then brought him to the Vatican in 2023 to lead the Dicastery of Bishops.
