KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - Animal shelters across the state were encouraged to apply for new grants. The Animal Friendly grants provide money to support spay and neuter services. Their funding comes from specialty license plates that you can get for $35. “Making spay and neuter services more accessible benefits both pets and the community,” State Veterinarian Samantha Beaty, D.V.M. said.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - The Knoxville Police Department reported an increase in guns being stolen from cars. KPD got 49 reports so far this year of firearms being stolen from cars in city limits. That’s almost double from the same time the previous year, which was 26. They released tips on how to prevent car burglaries; lock your car, take your keys and completely secure your vehicle and remove or safely secure any firearms so they aren’t seen.

OAK RIDGE, Tenn. (WVLT) - The Oak Ridge Police Department is partnering with the Scarboro Community to host a drug takeback event. “Drop off items can be: tablets, capsules, ointments, creams, and liquids,” organizers said. “They will be accepted in their packaging, so no need to take them out of their packages or containers.”Sharp needles nor syringes will be accepted. “Unused or expired prescription medications are a public safety issue,” officials said.

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. (WVLT) - From April 21-25, people around the country are honoring National Work Zone Awareness Week. Mark Nagi with the Tennessee Department of Transportation said 113 TDOT employees died in the line of duty. Crews set up 113 orange barrels along I-640 in Knox County to honor those lost.

OLIVER SPRINGS, Tenn. (WVLT) - A man was arrested after a stolen car was recovered in Oliver Springs. Police said an Automated License Plate Reader alerted them to a stolen vehicle was being driven on Tri County Boulevard. The car was stolen from Newark, New Jersey. Oliver Springs officers pulled the car over, and a 39-year-old man from Houston, Texas was arrested.
