A Modesto man accused of distributing racist slurs was convicted of stalking and making criminal threats against people based on their Latino ethnicity. Anthony Ruben Rodriguez, 39, was arrested four months ago on hate crime charges related to incidents between October and December 2024. Rodriguez distributed and posted multiple flyers containing hate speech in the Parklawn neighborhood in south Modesto and in other areas.

The maternal fetal medicine clinic had a soft opening this past week in the Valley Heart building on Florida Avenue, across from DMC. A fire in western Stanislaus County destroyed two hay barns and caused the deaths of seven horses, authorities said. Fire engines responded Thursday night to the structure fire in the 200 block of Poppy Avenue just outside the Patterson city boundary. The fire burned down a barn and spread to another structure on the adjacent property containing 10 haystacks and nine horses.

Stanislaus County approved a $22.5 million settlement of lawsuits seeking damages for deceased Modesto attorney Frank Carson, his widow, stepdaughter and five others who were wrongfully accused in a sensational murder case. In one of the largest civil rights court settlements in California, Carson’s estate and the late attorney’s wife, Georgia DeFilippo, each will receive $8 million.
