Sometimes the most popular attractions are overrated; other times, these places completely warrant the hype. The latter is certainly true of the Mount Willard Trail, one of the most highly recommended hikes in New Hampshire. This 3.1-mile out-and-back trek isn't for the faint of heart; it packs quite a punch but promises some of the best views in the region. Coming all the way from New Jersey to Boston for an Alan Jackson concert in August, I didn't have too much time - but I was determined to make the most of it. Working from home certainly has its perks. I love the short commute from my kitchen to my home office, the flexibility of setting convenient hours, and the opportunity to indulge in the yummy homemade meals my husband whips up for us at lunchtime. While I don’t think I could revert to full-time in-person office work at this point, I often miss having actual face-to-face contact with colleagues.

(Note: Hikers who have never hiked in the White Mountains before will find this a strenuous trip due to the distance, elevation gain, and exposure to weather above the treeline; this trip is best suited for more experienced hikers and is not a casual walk in the woods. Autumn promises so much fun, especially in New Hampshire. One of my favorite parts of the season is strolling through an orchard and filling a bucket with plump apples. But it isn’t until I take that first bite, as the juice sprays down my chin, that it really feels like fall. Only one thing rivals a freshly-picked apple and that’s hot, fresh apple cider donuts. You can enjoy both at this small-town orchard in New Hampshire all season long.

Most of us feel a little bit of nostalgia for our home states; I know I certainly do. While I have now lived outside of New Hampshire for more years than I have lived inside, I will always call the Granite State my home. Whenever I catch a glimpse of a Story Land t-shirt or a “Brake For Moose” bumper sticker, I feel a strong pull to take a trip north. There is another symbol that always reminds me of my New Hampshire roots and that is the picture of the Old Man of the Mountain.
