Dear Editor,The recent tragic death of a 13-year-old girl from rabies once again highlights the persistent and urgent public health challenge posed by this preventable, neglected tropical disease in the Philippines. Jamaica, a young girl from Manila, was bitten by a stray dog and, out of fear and misunderstanding, hid the incident from her parents. Two months later, on April 6, 2024, she died from encephalitic rabies, a universally fatal disease after symptom onset.

Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a leading cause of death globally. Angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) and angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB), compared in the ONTARGET trial, each prevent CVD. However, trial results may not be generalisable and their effectiveness in underrepresented groups is unclear. Using trial emulation methods within routine-care data to validate findings, we explored generalisability of ONTARGET results.

The role of social environment, i.e., the aggregate effect of social determinants of health (SDOHs), in determining dementia is unclear. We developed a novel polysocial risk score for dementia based on 19 SDOH among 5,199 participants in the Health and Retirement Study, US, to measure the social environmental risk. We used a survival analysis approach to assess the association between social environment and dementia risk in 2006-2020.

Leakage of methyl isocyanate from the Union Carbide plant in Bhopal, India, killed thousands and left deleterious trans-generational effects. Gas-exposed populations experience higher rates of lung and metabolic diseases, and immune dysregulation, all associated with adverse outcomes in coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). We used publicly available, official data from government sources to estimate COVID-19–associated crude mortality in populations with and without a history of gas exposure.
