Apr. 13—After more than a decade of planning and months of construction, Clarkston's new roundabout has made its debut. The new roundabout is a focal point near the Interstate Bridge, and Diagonal, Bridge and Second streets — one of the busiest intersections in the Lewiston-Clarkston Valley. There's still some artwork, a welcome sign and a quick ribbon-cutting in the works, but motorists got the green light to use it Friday.

A rare Chinese temple from the Gold Rush era will continue to be on display in Lewiston, but it's going to have a new home. Artifacts from the Beuk Aie Temple are moving from the Lewis-Clark State College Center for Arts and History to the Nez Perce County Historical Society and Museum, which has plans for a new building to house the collection.

Mar. 23—After almost 37 years of wearing a badge, Clarkston Police Chief Joel Hastings is retiring — and reflecting. The big cases he's helped with are intriguing, but he is more focused on the officers he's worked with as he heads for the door on March 31. "The thing I am most proud of is the people that work for the Clarkston Police Department," Hastings said. "As the police chief, my responsibility is to hire and retain the best people, and I think I've done that.

Mar. 14—ASOTIN — Asotin County's former public works director was terminated last month for "egregious violations of professional and ethical standards that constitute gross misconduct."According to documents released through a public records request, Russ Pelleberg provided members of the general public with unsupervised access to secured facilities, such as a radio tower on the Lewiston Hill, which resulted in damage to a power meter and a communications outage.

The fate of Garfield County Sheriff Drew Hyer and possible criminal charges depend on the Benton County prosecutor's decision. As of Friday, Drew Hyer had not been charged, but Benton County Prosecutor Eric Eisinger could soon weigh in. The Pullman Police Department was asked to investigate the sheriff after he allegedly entered two Pomeroy houses without warrants or welcome in 2024.
