This past April, I was attending the National Association of Elevator Contractors (NAEC) Spring Educational Conference in Miramar Beach, Florida, when I walked into a room full of women attending the Women in Motion meeting. I looked around and realized I was the only male in the room, and as I began to turn around to exit the meeting, one of the ladies in the room said, “Welcome! Please stay. We encourage everyone to attend our meetings, even men.” What was I thinking?

The first tower is a 21,400-m2 office building with 24 floors, four floors of garage and 14 elevators. The second tower consists of a hotel and residential apartments; the hotel has 130 rooms on the first 15 floors, and floors 17-24 are the residential areas with 57 apartments and seven elevators.

Your author has known Don Gelestino, CEO and president of Champion Elevator Corp., for some time now — first when he owned Ver-Tech Elevator and now leading Champion Elevator. Bessemer steel, formed into I-beams, enabled taller and more flexible frame design than cast iron; newly patented sprinkler heads allowed buildings to avoid strict height limits that were imposed to control the risk of fire; and the patenting of AC electricity allowed elevators to be electrically powered and rise to 10 or more stories.
