HONESDALE — While today's column is deeply rooted in the local sports world, more than anything else it's a love story. Our tale features Bob Simons, the shy soft-spoken golf coach who rewrote the PIAA record book, and Ann Marie Gilhool, the bubbly middle school teacher who became the first female athletic director in Wallenpaupack Area history. Despite a nearly 20 year age gap and wildly different personalities, somehow Bob and Ann Marie just clicked.

HONESDALE — An exciting new era is dawning for the Honesdale football program. At their regularly scheduled April 14 meeting, Wayne Highlands School Board members voted 8-0 to hire George Howanitz as varsity football coach. A star player at Valley View who went on to skipper his alma mater for 16 seasons, Howanitz will succeed Paul Russick, who resigned last month to take the job at Pittston Area.

HAWLEY — While the 2024-25 high school basketball season is now officially over, the awards and accolades just keep rolling in for a pair of Wallenpaupack Area stars. Ella Smith and Justin Blanding recently put the finishing touches on stellar hoops careers, once again leading the Buckhorns into the District 2 playoffs. And while the girls and boys teams came up short in their quest for tournament titles, Smith and Blanding earned high marks for their leadership abilities on and off the court.

Today's photo takes us back to the 1970s and the heyday of local youth hoops. Youth hoops historyThe Honesdale Biddy Basketball Association was formed during the winter of 1965-66. In the beginning, the fledgling youth hoops organization was called the Ho-Ca-Hi (short for Honesdale Catholic High) Midget Basketball Association.
