TWISTS and tangles are an exceptionally frustrating occurrence when fishing and one of the most frustrating of these is a wind knot. Wind knots are synonymous with spin tackle and braided line and with this combo being the most popular amongst anglers, almost every fisher at some stage will experience that dreaded tangled wind knot annoyance when casting. Wind knots should really be called casting knots as they are formed by inconsistency in line speed coming off the reel whilst casting.

WAHOO have always been one of my favourite species of fish to catch. In most areas they aren’t all that common, and off the Gold Coast where I live they turn up in erratic numbers each year. Some seasons we see plenty, but more generally we catch maybe half a dozen as by-catch when chasing billfish with lures. There are specific ways to target wahoo at certain times of the year and the following article will explain some of those methods in detail.

OVER many years of fishing I’ve discovered that the secret to consistent catches of just about any species usually comes down to one thing. The best tackle? A well organised boat? The best lures money can buy? Good braid and leader? Time on the water? No, no, no and no again. You can spend all the time on the water you like with the best gear and sharpest hooks but you’ll catch very little unless you actually find the fish to start with.

I WATCHED the rhythmic sway of the rods in the holders over a lazy glass-like ocean. A message on the phone broke the ambience and I looked away to check it. However the unmistakable sound of creaking graphite and braid sizzling through the guides quickly had me scrambling to wrestle a bent rod from its holder with a serious fish connected to the other end. These early moments of a battle with a big red will keep you coming back time and again.

One of my earliest memories involves rock fishing at Malua Bay on the NSW south coast with my grandfather. As a six or seven year old I was catching silver bream (sweep) on a kids’ fibreglass rod and red plastic sidecast reel. It was an exciting experience for a youngster and many years later I still remember being fascinated by the soapy water those fish came from.
