VOLUNTEERS who are the mainstay of Ireland’s only community run swimming pool are delighted to have received grant support for a number of new initiatives. The Wild Atlantic Pool and Fitness Centre in Baltimore has secured funding to enhance some of its facilities, but it is also seeking community support to cover the cost of replacing an important piece of equipment, its jacuzzi.

FISHING industry representatives in West Cork told the EU Commissioner for Fisheries and Oceans, Costas Kadís that Ireland’s burden sharing needs to be addressed in the review of the Common Fisheries Policy. The Commissioner was in Castletownbere on Friday to meet with industry representatives on European Maritime Day 2025. The aim of the event was to bring together industry leaders, policy makers, scientists, and members of the general public.

A 15-YEAR-OLD girl from Skibbereen has been appointed as an arts ambassador following her winning entry in the This is Art competition. Isabelle Prime won the overall prize in her category at the end of 2024 for her large acrylic work, ‘Wader’, but it was only recently that she was invited to be an arts ambassador for the competition, and to be involved in this year’s Cruinniú na nÓg events on Saturday June 7th.

AN attempt by volunteer members of Wildlife Rescue Cork to save the life of a fox cub found in Schull proved unsuccessful on Tuesday. The cub was just a few weeks old when it was found in Balteen, near Schull. The person who found it lost no time in contacting Wildlife Rescue Cork who, through its WhatsApp volunteer network, made a request for someone to arrange to have the cub delivered to the organisation’s base in Whitechurch, near Blarney.

WITH an estimated 150,000 to 200,000 foxes in Ireland before the breeding season, West Cork TD Michael Collins believes they are a species that needs to be controlled. However, his stance has been criticised for being undemocratic by local Social Democrat councillor, Isobel Towse, who said that Deputy Collins’ actions were an attempt ‘to stop debate on the topic altogether’.
