The Louisville Zoo's two aging elephants have arrived at their "retirement home" in Tennessee, zoo officials announced in a news release June 5. African elephant Mikki, 39, and Asian elephant Punch, 55, will live out their days at The Elephant Sanctuary in Hohenwald, Tennessee. The elephants have been longtime fixtures at the Louisville Zoo — Punch arrived at the zoo in 1973 and Mikki came in 1987, according to the zoo's website.

Michael Sullivan has been named as the next chief of the U.S. Capitol Police. Sullivan started his policing career in 1995 with the Louisville Division of Police. He continued climbing the ranks after Louisville Metro Police was formed, serving as deputy chief from 2016-19. A former Louisville Metro Police deputy chief has been appointed to serve as the chief of the United States Capitol Police, according to a June 4 news release.

The University of Louisville will not receive roughly $1 million of previously approved NIH funding. Supplemental awards aimed at getting people from underrepresented backgrounds into biomedical research were among the cuts. A program that helped recent college graduates become stronger candidates for PhD programs was also eliminated.

Shawn "Mickey" Stines, the former Letcher County Sheriff accused of shooting and killing District Judge Kevin Mullins inside his chambers in September 2024, has asked for his indictment to be dismissed, according to a motion filed June 4. Attorneys for Stines cited two primary reasons for the request in the motion: That prosecutors' failed to record a grand jury meeting and that the grand jury was deprived of key information for its deliberations.

UofL board members found former President Kim Schatzel's performance to be satisfactory in an evaluation last summer. But as the CJ continues looking into what caused the separation, the review points to some of the board's critiques of her leadership.
