At its Tuesday, May 27 meeting the Ojai City Council is being asked to select one of four firms who will conduct a forensic financial examination after the city learned on May 15 of 33 total fraud and embezzlement charges filed on April 3 against then Ojai Assistant City Manager Carl Alameda for alleged crimes that occurred when he was Assistant City Manager of La Cañada Flintridge. Alameda pleaded not guilty at a May 14 arraignment hearing in Los Angeles County Superior Court.

Ojai could move closer May 27 to providing permanent supportive housing for 30 people who are currently living in wilderness cabins on the Ojai City Hall campus, if the council approves four items on the May 27 agenda. The council is slated to take a re-vote on the location for the Cabin Village, find the project exempt from state environmental laws, approve a Design Review Permit and enter into a management agreement for the project.

Ventura County Board of Supervisors received and filed a report titled “Racial Equity in Policies and Practices of the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office” at its May 20 meeting. The Ventura County Public Safety Racial Equity Advisory Group analyzed data the Ventura County Sheriff’s Office provided to the state under the state’s Racial and Identity Profiling Act (RIPA), passed in 2015. The advisory group states its 60-page report is “the first comprehensive analysis” of the data.

As a result of being included in newly expanded High and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zones, as of July 1, at least 60,000 properties in Ventura County now must be inspected by the fire department for defensible space compliance when the property is sold. In addition, sellers of those properties must disclose that they are in a high or very high Fire Hazard Severity zone.

Ojai City Council will meet at 5 p.m. on Tuesday, May 27 for a special meeting to choose a firm to conduct a forensic financial examination in the wake of the city learning about charges brought against former Assistant City Manager Carl Alameda related to alleged crimes prior to working for Ojai. Alameda has been charged with 11 felony counts of embezzlement and 23 counts of insurance fraud for alleged crimes from 2016 to 2022 when he worked for the city of La Cañada Flintridge.
