While the red-and-green trolley cars with nostalgic wood interiors carry riders to their stops, the drivers naturally become watchful caretakers of riders. Many of those riders are now expressing concerns and asking questions about the city’s plans for the trolleys.

Ojai City Manager Ben Harvey is overseeing changes in the plan for Ojai’s Cabin Village, funded by the $12.3 million state Encampment Resolution Grant, to permanently house 30 people currently living on the Ojai City Hall campus in Tent Town. The changes include a “cost cap” of $9.5 million and a request from Harvey to use “modular construction” for the project, followed by an agreement for “flexibility” in construction materials, according to the city manager’s weekly updates.

New Pope Leo XIV, chosen on May 8, following the death of Pope Francis, is well-known in Ojai, where he has visited at least twice. “Overwhelmed and overjoyed,” exclaimed Father Barnaby Johns, Prior Provincial of the Province of St. Augustine in California, which owns Villanova Preparatory School in Ojai. The announcement of the new pope came after a two-day conclave at the Sistine Chapel in the Vatican.
