An Ajax forensic artist hopes her work will help find some answers to a decades-old question, and the person at the heart of it. Diana Trepkov’s drawing of Donna Barnfield, a 13 year-old girl who went missing in 1981 in Lexington, KY, is being featured on a billboard across the street from the local police department. “Over 70,000 people drive by it every day,” Trepkov said in an interview.

Lakeridge Health and Grandview Kids are bringing a surgical team to the children’s centre in Ajax. Lakeridge Health president and CEO Cynthia Davis said in a presentation to Pickering council on April 7 that an ambulatory surgical procedure room will open at Grandview. The signing ceremony will take place Friday.

Three Uxbridge friends and teammates have not only made it big, but they’ve done it together. And they’re going on the trip of a lifetime. Rowan Closs, Andrew Neveu and Cole Harris are headed to Fiji to represent Canada on the U20 men’s rugby team. “It’s pretty incredible they all made the national team at the same time,” said Jim Closs, Rowan’s father. Since the trip is expected to cost $5,000 each, Jim, who has also coached all three players, set up a GoFundMe campaign with a goal of $15,000.

The band may be finished, but the street sign will stay. The “Sum 41 Way” street sign will remain at Falby Court indefinitely, a nod to the band that got its start in Ajax. The Town of Ajax celebrated the local band’s career with the “Sum 41 Way” street sign in January as the members finished up their farewell tour. The town recently announced that the sign will remain at the northeast corner of Falby Court, the same street where the founding members of Sum 41 met at Exeter High School in 1996.

A single mom fears for the future of her son, herself and the others who live in her apartment complex she calls the “last affordable housing” in Ajax. Three buildings in downtown Ajax, 145, 147 and 149 Kings Cres., could be torn down to make way for a 25-storey mixed-use building if a development proposal goes through. “I’m terrified I’m going to have to live in my car with my son because I don’t have the funds to pay these rent prices other than where I am now,” said Kristi Bentley.

If you’re looking for a family doctor in Pickering, you may be in luck. Six more doctors are joining Priority Health — Family Medicine and Urgent Care, making the total 13. “I think the system is just stressed,” Dr. Sandeep Dhillon said. “We’re trying to alleviate it as much as possible.” The busy clinic is on the first floor of Lakeridge Health’s Jerry Coughlan Health and Wellness Centre (JCHWC), at 1690 Dersan St.The clinic is also expanding and adding more examination rooms.

This metaphor is the theme of a new children’s book by Pickering resident and keynote speaker Sam Demma, who talks to youth about many topics, including hope, service and self-belief. In May, Demma is launching his second book — and his first children’s book — “Be Someone’s Taco.” Inspired by Demma’s real-life experience, this illustrative story tells readers about the transformative power of empathy and kindness.
