A Pickering woman who was once facing the end stages of cystic fibrosis has received a royal honour, more than five years later. Stephanie Stavros recently received a King Charles III Coronation Medal recognizing her advocacy for the cystic fibrosis (CF) community. “This honour reflects the power of a community that refused to stay silent,” Stavros said.

Tributes from elected officials, friends, family, former colleagues and Whitby residents are pouring in after the death of one of the town’s most influential residents. Former mayor Desmond Newman, known by many as Des, died at the age of 94 on June 9. “Whitby has lost a respected leader, but Newman’s legacy lives on in the community he helped build,” Whitby Mayor Elizabeth Roy said in a statement.
