Any vitriol or scorn you might expect at a pre-election debate was directed toward the U.S. Wednesday evening as Northumberland-Clarke candidates met to answer questions at the Port Hope Lions Centre. With less than two weeks before voters head to the polls in the April 28 federal election, the Northumberland Central Chamber of Commerce, the Port Hope Chamber and the Clarington Board of Trade hosted the event, with candidates answering questions sent in from the public.

Following several warnings, communications, and advisements, the Town of Cobourg says it has had to place an order and issue a penalty notice on the Transition House shelter and the County of Peterborough, due to continued noncompliance of the shelter’s fire safety plan. The directive calls for Transition House to become compliant with applicable law and to ensure the fire plan is followed in accordance with the Fire Protection and Prevention Act and the town’s emergency care establishment bylaw.

The link between Cobourg’s Bowen family and actor Ryan Reynolds goes back more than a decade. Nine-year-old Grace Bowen fought her battle with osteosarcoma — the same cancer that hit Terry Fox — for more than a year before she died March 13, 2015. During her battle, there were numerous fundraisers held locally for Grace and her family. A large part of the time, the family was at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.
