RUSH SPRINGS, Okla. (KSWO) - Watermelon is the state vegetable of Oklahoma. But in Rush Springs, it’s so much more than that. For more than 80 years, this small Grady County town has welcomed visitors from across the state, the country and even the world, always on the second Saturday in August. “Rush Springs is the Watermelon Capitol of the World,” says former Lion’s Club President Merlene Rust. The Rush Springs Watermelon Festival started as a small town picnic in 1940.

LAWTON, Okla. (KSWO) - An abandoned structure in the 1200 block of SW G Ave. was destroyed by a fire Friday morning. The Lawton Fire Department was called out at just after 7:30 a.m. Fire crews arrived to a structure fully involved in flames. There appeared to be no injuries. FREDERICK, Okla. (KSWO) - Oklahoma has been a state for nearly 120 years. That journey to statehood began in Southwest Oklahoma in 1905, with President Theodore Roosevelt’s trip to Frederick. “The President in December of 1904 had been talking to his southwest advisor, Colonel Lyon in the oval office,” said Dr. Greg Roberts of the Tillman County Historical Society. “The Colonel told him about a man in the Southwest territory of Oklahoma that caught wolves alive with his hand.

GARVIN COUNTY, Okla. (KSWO) - A Duncan man lost his life in a crash in Garvin County Saturday afternoon. It happened on Highway Seven, about four miles east of Hennepin. According to Oklahoma Highway Patrol, 21-year old James Martinez struck a flatbed trailer from behind, after the driver of the vehicle pulling the trailer was stopped by a flagman due to a lane closure in a construction zone. Martinez was pronounced dead at the scene.

KIOWA COUNTY, Okla. (KSWO) - A 48-year-old woman from Mountain View lost her life in a single car crash in Kiowa County on Monday night. It happened just after 9:30 p.m. one mile west of Carnegie on OK-9. Chastity D. Clark was transported by Air Evac to OU Trauma center in Oklahoma City, where she later died. A 39-year-old passenger was admitted in fair condition. The Oklahoma Highway Patrol is investigating the wreck. Copyright 2024 KSWO. All rights reserved.
