FLATHEAD CO., Mont. — A woman is behind bars in Kalispell facing a charge of vehicular homicide while under the influence. Kala Knaus, 31, was arrested in Flathead County for the Jan. 1 crash. Court documents allege that just before 1:30 a.m. dispatch received a crash notification as well as a phone call of a two-vehicle head-on crash on Highway 35 near Holt Drive. A trooper arrived on scene just before 1:45 a.m. and noticed a red Kia resting on its driver’s side about 10 feet away from the highway.

MISSOULA, Mont. — A former massage parlor owner accused of prostitution and sex trafficking pleaded not guilty to four new felony charges on Wednesday. Richard R. Bushey attended the hearing via Zoom and pleaded not guilty to sex trafficking, operating a house of prostitution and three counts of sex trafficking.

BELGRADE, Mont. — A 13-year-old Belgrade boy is dead after a rollover crash in Gallatin County early Sunday morning. Authorities say he drove a Subaru Legacy on Old Frontage Road around 1:21 a.m. when he crossed the centerline, overcorrected and went off the right side of the road. The vehicle rolled several times. The boy was transported to the hospital where he later died from his injuries. Alcohol, drugs, and speed are all factors in this crash. Officials say the boy did not wear a seatbelt.

KALISPELL, Mont. — A Bigfork man was sentenced to 100 years in prison Tuesday morning for the deliberate homicide of his mother’s boyfriend. Derrick James Jackson, 39, was acquitted of killing his mother, Tricia DeMotts, but found guilty by a jury of killing her boyfriend, Stanley Grotberg, and tampering with evidence on April 7.

DEER LODGE, Mont. — The Montana State prison in Deer Lodge, houses over 1,600 inmates. NBC Montana got an inside look at the facility — and what’s being done to address overcrowding, and to find out how the facility operates each and every day. The Montana State Prison is the only men's state-run prison. It is a multi-classification facility. However, just like many correctional facilities across the country, space is becoming an issue.
