Todd Jr., a Missoula artist known for his portraits and prints of authors and musicians as well as fiery commentary on social subjects, all done with intricate detail, died the last weekend of April. He was 87 years old. He took his own iconoclastic path to becoming one of the state's most respected artists. He grew up in a working class Great Falls family who encouraged his drawing from an early age.

Celebration of life, estate sale dates setKristi Hager, a widely admired western Montana visual artist, died in November at age 78, after a long and prolific career exploring different mediums, from drawing and painting to photography. This week, her estate announced two important dates that are open to the public. Celebration of life: The gathering will be held Saturday, May 31, from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. at Pineview Park, 1010 Pineview Drive.

The University of Montana museum’s “19 Under 39: Celebrating Montana’s Emerging Artists” show presents a statewide snapshot of what artists in that age range are making.

    Alan Wyland, who’s worked as a nurse for 16 years, says a clinic is a refreshing and exciting environment where you’re surrounded by people who are there for a common purpose: helping others. “It inspires me and motivates me to get up in the morning and go to work,” he said. Wyland is a clinic nurse at the Providence Heart Institute.

    The String Orchestra of the Rockies is closing out its 40th anniversary season on Sunday with its ongoing focus on American music, which can include both Aaron Copland and Dvořák’s Quartet No. 12, written when the great Czech composer was visiting the country. “This particular concert, since it's a celebration of the past and the future, I tried to pick music that you would maybe call comfort food,” said Maria Larionoff, the artistic director and a violinist.
