I was amazed by how fast days flew by when I first started working as a journalist. Seemed it was Monday, then Friday. Where did the work week go? Soon decades were flying by —  and suddenly I find I’ve been an Advocate reporter for 33 years. When did that happen? On Friday, I finally stepped off the local news track to early-retire from the job. But not without a bittersweet look back at a very fulfilling, purpose-driven career that was also incredibly immersive.

Alberta municipalities voted by nearly 86 per cent against a provincial ban on electronic vote counters on Thursday — but this didn't budge Alberta Premier Danielle Smith from resisting their use in future elections. Smith initially spoke about having "trust and confidence" in municipalities, because "you understand what your residents need more than anyone" when she  addressed more than 1,000 delegates at the Alberta Municipalities conference in Red Deer.

Susan Strong has climate anxiety. "I used to worry about what the world will be like in future, for my children and grandchildren —  but climate change is already happening to us," said Strong on Wednesday, when the late September temperature was climbing to 29 C in Red Deer. She lists various extreme-weather related disasters  — from the annual wildfires that destroyed parts of Jasper and Fort McMurray to floods, monsoons and hurricanes in the Caribbean, Europe, Asia and elsewhere.

You dont have to be a curling fan to enjoy Cow Patti Theatre’s ‘Hurray Hard’… if you are, tho, this Alberta-made, award-winning comedy will really hit the target (a double treat!) It was a great way to spend a winter evening and well worth a trip to the Lacombe area

Looking for a good show at the Edmonton Fringe Festival? Check out Richard Beaune’s heatbreaking, yet riotous performance as a reluctant prophet in ‘The ‘Commandment.’ Edgy, at times discomforting, but a powerhouse performance with a message that’s definitely worth hearing.
