TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - In Florida, Emancipation Day is traditionally celebrated on May 20. On that day in 1865, the Emancipation Proclamation was read on the steps of the Knott House near downtown Tallahassee, which served as the temporary Union Headquarters. It was just weeks after the end of the Civil War and two years after President Lincoln issued the Emancipation Proclamation. Celebrations erupted after the news and continue to this day.

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. (WCTV) - Horns blowing, cars zooming by, waiting at lights. No one likes dealing with rush hour. But then you look over, and there’s music, fancy footwork, and a wave. “I’m just out here making people smile.” Valdosta resident Kevonta Browne said. He makes people smile by dancing on the street corner in the middle of lunch-hour traffic in Valdosta. The 26-year-old spends a couple hours, a few days a week, trying to make people smile.

(WCTV) - WCTV partners with DonorsChoose, a nonprofit organization that allows individuals to donate directly to public school classroom projects, to help a teacher in the Big Bend and South Georgia. We highlight a teacher and their needs for their classroom once a month. For our April “Community Classroom” segment, we’re highlighting Becca Bertoch.  She is a teacher at Riley Elementary School in Tallahassee.
