Bridge Repairs to Cause Closures on US 20 at I-94

In Porter County near Burns Harbor and the town of Porter, bridge repairs will require about a two-week closure on U.S. 20 at the I-94 interchange. The Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) says beginning on or after Monday, June 2, 2025, eastbound U.S. 20 will be closed under the interstate at Exit 22 so repair work can be conducted on the Interstate 94 bridge above. In addition the ramp from eastbound I-94 to eastbound U.S. 20 will be closed due to the location of the work zone.

Sheriff Balon says its primary responsibility will be to provide a police presence for safe watercraft operations in Lake Michigan during heavy boating days and it will work closely with marine units from the Lake County Sheriff’s Department and LaPorte County Sheriff’s Office, Indiana Department of Natural Resources (DNR) and U.S. Coast Guard.

In Indianapolis, the Indianapolis Colts are announcing the death of owner Jim Irsay. The team said in a statement that Irsay died in his sleep Wednesday May 21, 2025. Irsay was named the youngest general manager in team history in 1984 at age 37 following the team’s arrival in Indianapolis, taking over sole ownership of the franchise in 1997. Under his ownership, the Colts won the city’s first Super Bowl in 2006.

They gave it an EF intensity rating of “unknown” because it was tracked through open farmland and did not cause any damage. The landspout formed around 6 pm Eastern time Tuesday May 13 2025.

In northwest Indiana, Bishop Robert McClory of the Gary Diocese said in a release “This is an exciting time,” following the announcement of the election of Pope Leo XIV on Thursday May 8, 2025, Bishop McClory adding, “We’re part of Chicagoland. So, we get to celebrate with great joy that he exercised leadership here.” Formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, Pope Leo was born at Mercy Hospital in Chicago in 1955 and grew up near the Little Calumet River in south suburban Dolton, Illinois.
Valparaiso Announces Compost Awareness Week

In Valparaiso, the city has proclaimed the first full week of May as International Compost Awareness Week, announced Mayor Jon Costas. “Composting is an effective way to reduce waste. Organic materials make up about 30% of the material going to landfills so returning these resources to the soil instead of a landfill is good for our Earth,” said Costas. Valpo Parks has partnered with Porter County Recycling & Waste Reduction for a pilot program to promote composting.
