In east central Indiana east of Muncie, a landspout in Randolph County has been detected by the National Weather Service. They gave it an EF intensity rating of “unknown” because it was tracked through open farmland and did not cause any damage. The landspout formed around 6 pm Eastern time Tuesday May 13 2025.

In northwest Indiana, Bishop Robert McClory of the Gary Diocese said in a release “This is an exciting time,” following the announcement of the election of Pope Leo XIV on Thursday May 8, 2025, Bishop McClory adding, “We’re part of Chicagoland. So, we get to celebrate with great joy that he exercised leadership here.” Formerly Cardinal Robert Francis Prevost, Pope Leo was born at Mercy Hospital in Chicago in 1955 and grew up near the Little Calumet River in south suburban Dolton, Illinois.

In Valparaiso, the city has proclaimed the first full week of May as International Compost Awareness Week, announced Mayor Jon Costas. “Composting is an effective way to reduce waste. Organic materials make up about 30% of the material going to landfills so returning these resources to the soil instead of a landfill is good for our Earth,” said Costas. Valpo Parks has partnered with Porter County Recycling & Waste Reduction for a pilot program to promote composting.

In Lake Station, the Lake County Sheriff’s Department Dive Unit recently conducted a training session at Bicentennial Park. Officials say divers gained experience with searching along a guide line in murky water while sifting through debris. The Lake County Sheriff’s Department Drone Unit also participated in exercises on Sunday April 27, 2025, using a drone to transport a life jacket and other rescue equipment to divers in the water.

In Hebron, the town recently broke ground on a water infrastructure improvement project to replace nearly 9,000 feet of aging and deteriorating water mains. The project will improve water quality, increase fire protection capabilities, and ensure reliable water service for the town’s residents for years to come, a news release said.
