미국 미네소타 출신의 여성 오드리 휴셋(Audrey Huset)은 지난 2022년 99세를 일기로 세상을 떠났습니다. 그녀는 생전 춤을 추며 휴일을 즐겼고, 아코디언을 연주했으며, 아주 열정적으로 빈티지 울 스커트를 수집했죠. “할머니는 한때 1,000개가 넘는 스커트를 가지고 계셨을지도 몰라요.” 휴셋의 손녀 매 콜번(Mae Colburn)이 미국판 <보그>와의 인터뷰에서 전한 말입니다. 역시 미네소타 출신으로 현재는 브루클린에 거주 중인 콜번은 낡고 버려진 천을 활용해 러그를 만드는 아티스트입니다. 그녀는 할머니가 간직하고 있던 스커트를 정리하기 시작했습니다. 처음에는 콜번과 콜번의 부모 모두 스커트를 러그로 재활용할 생각이었죠. 콜번의 가족은 아주 옛날에도 할머니의 오래된 스커트로 러그를 만든 적이 있었거든요. “어린 시절, 집에 있던 많은 러그들이 그렇게 해서 만든 것이었어요.” 이런 경험은 콜번이 러그를 소재로 작업하는 아티스트가 된 데에도 영향을 미쳤죠.
