HORN LAKE, Miss — Horn Lake residents elected their first African American mayor on Tuesday, June 3. Democrat Jimmy Stokes defeated his opponent, Republican Daniel "Danny" Klein, by just 83 votes. Stokes is a Memphis native who moved to Horn Lake with his wife, Akilah Hill Stokes, in the early 2000s. He currently serves as the Ward 5 Planning Commissioner. He is also the senior pastor at Northeast Side Church of Christ in Bartlett, Tennessee.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — MSCS and the YMCA have free summer meal options for kids under 18. Some students in the Mid-South rely on their schools to get a hot meal every day. But with schools out for the summer, families do not have that option. In 2024, Tennessee joined the Summer Electronic Benefit Transfer (EBT). This made about 700,000 Tennessee families eligible to receive $40 per month per child during the summer up. In 2025, Tennessee opted out of the program.
