MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The Mid-South is under a heat dome that is keeping dangerous temperatures around all this week. And it can be deadly for children or pets, if they're left in the car. That said, some states have laws that let people break into cars to save a child. It's called A Good Samaritan Law, which allows a person to break a car's window if they notice a child or even a pet locked inside suffering.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - The man Memphis Police said wanted to kidnap Memphis Mayor Paul Young appeared in court Friday. Trenton Abston was charged with attempted kidnapping, stalking, and aggravated trespassing. Abston was arraigned on those charges during Friday's court appearance. Abston's family sat in the courtroom for support. FOX13 spoke to his sister Monesha Abston and his uncle, Theodore Martin Sr. Abston's sister told FOX13 she wanted to make sure her brother knew he had support.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - A Mid-South law firm on Thursday plans to announce a series of racial discrimination lawsuits, including one involving the DeSoto County Schools district. This case accuses the district of discriminatory practices and inequitable treatment of Black students. That is according to The Reaves Law Firm, which is planning to file all of these lawsuits. In a news release, the law firm said the lawsuits are part of a broader push to hold establishments accountable.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Heavy rain and strong storms swept through the Mid-South Thursday morning. Many areas experienced flash flooding and downed trees. In East Memphis, a massive tree fell on top of a home on Shotwell Street. Three women were inside including Clara Mashburn. “I woke up to thunder and lightning and then I heard a scream," Mashburn told FOX13. Mashburn moved into the home with two friends in January.

MEMPHIS, Tenn. - Two former Memphis Police (MPD) officers charged with Tyre Nichols' murder are set to appear in state court Tuesday, records show. Emmitt Martin III and Desmond Mills Jr. were the two ex-MPD officers who did not go to trial in May, when the three other former officers — Tadarrius Bean, Justin Smith and Demetrius Haley — were acquitted.
