In vitro CRISPR screens have transformed high-throughput functional genomics, enabling the systematic study of gene functions in cell culture. However, these methods have yet to make the same mark for screening in vivo. To address this gap, the Ulrich Elling lab from Institute of Molecular Biotechnology of the Austrian Academy of Sciences (now at Viverita Discovery in Vienna) is working to bring CRISPR screening into in vivo biology.
