Gene transfer has a central role in shaping microbial community, and influences cell–cell interactions, niche adaptation and the spread of antibiotic resistance genes. Accurately tracking gene transfer events across species in real-world environmental conditions is essential to understanding how resistance genes propagate and persist in complex microbial communities.
