CHICAGO — Canadian Ryan Nembhard was up in his hotel room at the Marriott Marquis just hours after dominating the G League Elite Camp when he got a knock on his door. He was one of five players notified they had earned an invite to the NBA Draft Combine after an impressive two-day performance in front of NBA scouts and executives. To say the knock on the door for Nembhard was unexpected would be a bit of a lie. “I feel like I should’ve been here in the first place,” said Nembhard.

Top Canadian basketball prospect Will Riley is declaring for the 2025 NBA draft. The Kitchener native is projected to be a first-round pick in this summer’s draft and likely the only Canadian to be selected this year. He has signed with Klutch Sports Group agency, founded by prominent sports agent Rich Paul. “I feel like I’m ready and it’s been my dream since I was kid,” Riley told the Star.

Julia Edey doesn’t remember taking her son Zach to Scotiabank Arena to watch many Toronto Raptors games when he was growing up. They went to see a team in another sport: The National Lacrosse League’s Toronto Rock. “Very Canadian of us, I guess,” Julia said with a laugh before her son returned as a seven-foot-four Memphis Grizzlies centre playing his first NBA game at home.

Minutes before the Raptors tipped off against the Los Angeles Clippers, a wave of boos could be heard inside Scotiabank Arena as “The Star-Spangled Banner” was performed. A few seconds later, it was the opposite, with fans erupting in cheers during the Canadian national anthem as many sang “O Canada” loudly.
