    Jimmy Carter, the 39th U.S. president and only one from Georgia, has died at age 100 after more than a year in hospice care. Carter, a native of Plains, Georgia, was the longest-lived president in U.S. history. Prior to the White House, he served on the Georgia Senate from 1963-1967 and as the 76th governor of Georgia from 1971-1975. He narrowly defeated Republican incumbent Gerald Ford in the 1976 U.S. presidential election.
