One killed, two injured in Highway 70 crash

One person was killed and two others injured in a two-vehicle crash on Highway 70 at Double Springs Road Wednesday afternoon. The crash involved a 2014 Ford Focus traveling east on US 70N and a 2018 Chrysler Pacifica traveling west on US 70N near West Gate Drive, according to the preliminary report from the Tennessee Highway Patrol. ¬†THP said the Ford Focus crossed the center line into the eastbound lane and struck the Pacifica head-on, which resulted in the overturning of the Pacifica.
Trooper shooting suspects may face life without parole

One of the issues to be decided in the case against two men charged in the shooting of a state trooper last summer is whether their punishment could be life without parole. Timothy Laquan Davis Jr., 25, of Nashville, and Braze Roland Rucker, 29, of Nashville, appeared in the courtroom of Judge Gary McKenzie in Putnam County Criminal Court April 25.

Earlier this month, Cookeville was recognized for being a Tree City USA for 36 years. The city must fulfill four requirements annually to be a Tree City USA including an active tree ordinance, having a tree care or community advocacy group, celebrating Arbor Day and spending at least $2 per capita on growing and sustaining the urban and community forest.

PCFD responds to barn, brush fires Tuesday

The cause of a barn fire on Water Plant Road Tuesday is under investigation, according to the Putnam County Fire Department. A neighbor of the barn reported the fire, according to PCFD Deputy Chief Charles Doss. About 10 PCFD firefighters responded after they received the call at approximately 9:30 a.m."It had spread and gotten near another residence," Doss said. The fire burned the barn to the ground, according to Doss.
Cookeville may begin third phase of 10th Street improvements

Cookeville is on the verge of starting the process for the final phase of the 10th Street widening project. The city council this week will consider a $520,000 contract with Clinton Engineering to provide engineering services to widen 10th Street from Fisk Road to Washington Avenue. "It's just under a mile long, 4,900 linear feet, convert it all to five lanes, sidewalks on both sides, redo the storm sewer, redo power lines, relocate necessary water lines," Cookeville City Manager James Mills said.

A U.S. Senator visited a popular Cookeville business Monday on a tour across Tennessee. Sen. Bill Hagerty visited 10-time CrossFit champion Rich Froning's CrossFit Mayhem, the second of three stops Hagerty made in Tennessee, beginning with Taiho Manufacturing in Gordonsville and ending with Beehive Industries in Knoxville. "One thing we went out to see was the buffalo," he said. Froning said he started the buffalo farm in 2019 and has up to 30 now.
Recall issued for some Johnsonville brats

A popular brand of sausages has announced a recall because the items may be contaminated with foreign material, specifically hard plastic pieces. According to the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service, Johnsonville is recalling approximately 22,672 pounds of its cheddar bratwurst products produced on Feb. 5. The recall involves 19-ounce sealed firm tray packages containing five pieces of “Johnsonville BRATS CHEDDAR Bratwurst” and the package code B9FOD.
