DOUGLAS COUNTY, Colo. (KDVR) — The Douglas County School District is the latest district grappling with lower enrollment. Officials said early planning is underway to close and consolidate some of its elementary schools in the 2026-27 school year. School officials cite lower birth rates as a contributing factor, noting young families are choosing different areas to live in Douglas County and some school locations are no longer ideal.

DENVER (KDVR) — Obesity rates continue to be a critical issue for kids and teens in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. More than 19% of kids and teens across the country struggle with obesity, the agency said. Local health experts said a wide range of factors are contributing to the high rates, including the foods Americans eat, genetics and environmental factors, in addition to sleep and a rise in mental health disorders.

DENVER (KDVR) — The Denver City Council is expected to vote on Mayor Mike Johnston’s proposed budget for 2025 on Tuesday night. The budget, in part, aims to combat an expected drop in federal funding for several projects, officials said. Leaders said housing and safety continue to be key funding priorities. According to officials, the city’s general fund is estimated to be up 0.6% from 2024. Leaders said about $220 million would be in reserves.

(KDVR) — Tuesday morning, the Arapahoe County Board of County Commissioners will discuss one of two final hearings for a proposed oil and gas drilling site near the Aurora Reservoir. The meetings are scheduled for Tuesday and Friday at 9 a.m.The proposal, known as the Lowry Ranch Comprehensive Area Plan by Civitas Oil and Gas, has been in the works since 2022.
