David Joyce has resigned from Averett University after just three months as its president. The university announced that Joyce is stepping down due to a recent medical diagnosis his wife received. Venita Mitchell, vice president of student engagement, is now acting president. The university has contracted with higher education search firm Academic Search to fill the position.

Seven Virginia Tech students and two alumni at the state college in Blacksburg have had their visas revoked. President Tim Sands said in a letter posted Thursday morning that records for nine people, including three undergraduate students, had been terminated in the federal Student and Exchange Visitor Information System.

Averett University is suing its former chief financial officer and an investment firm that the school claims colluded to hide budget deficits. The private university in Danville has been cutting costs since spring 2024, when it discovered signs of financial mismanagement that led to a budget shortfall. Those withdrawals added up to nearly $20 million, according to the suit.

Averett University has listed its 130-acre equestrian facility up for sale for $1.6 million. The facility, located just across the state line from Danville in Providence, North Carolina, features stalls for up to 31 horses, four pastures and a riding arena, along with a mobile home for barn manager housing. “We continue to explore all options for making Averett University financially stable, which includes selling the Equestrian Center,” Averett spokesperson Cassie Jones said Friday by email.
