Cuts to the small federal agency that supports public libraries and museums across the country will impact efforts in Vermont to preserve local history, including a program that involved the Waterbury Historical Society. The Vermont Historical Society on Thursday announced that due to the termination of a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, it would lay off a staff member and stop work on a new local history project.

The discovery was made around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday by someone walking along the river near the Bolton Falls dam, police said. The Waterbury Fire Department assisted troopers with the recovery and the body was taken to the Vermont Chief Medical Examinter’s office in Burlington, police said. An autopsy on Friday so far identified the deceased as John Gaye, age 45, of Essex, police said.

Vermont State Police are investigating the theft of two vehicles from a property management company in Waterbury on Saturday. Sgt. William Warner at the Berlin barracks said state police received a report shortly after 8:30 on Sunday morning about a vehicle theft from Stromme Properties on Railroad Street, a property management company. “During the investigation, it was learned another vehicle had been taken from the same site,” Warner noted in his press release.

Longtime Perry Hill resident Al Lewis picked up on the pavement and lane markings point. He brought a homemade map with photos of the intersection from various angles to illustrate marking additional turning lanes on the existing roadways at the Stowe Street and Blush Hill Road entry points to the intersection as well as on Rt. 100 northbound where it meets Stowe Street. Former Town Manager Bill Shepeluk said he thought Lewis’ idea has merit.

The Montpelier Police Department prepared for the massive gathering by closing State Street to vehicle traffic. Afterward in a social media post, the department thanked local residents and motorists for their “understanding and patience” as the city accommodated the large crowd. Capitol Police, the city Public Works Department and Vermont State Security assisted with traffic control and public safety for the afternoon, according to police.

A heroic rescue that played out at a frigid pond in Cambridge in December 2023 has gotten another national recognition, this time from the Carnegie Hero Fund Commission. Vermont State Police Trooper Michelle Archer will receive a medal as one of 17 Carnegie Heroes for her lifesaving rescue of an 8-year-old girl who fell through ice on a pond on Dec. 17, 2023.

The EFUD district boundaries are those of the former Village of Waterbury which was dissolved in 2018. The area encompasses properties served by municipal wastewater.
