Cuts to the small federal agency that supports public libraries and museums across the country will impact efforts in Vermont to preserve local history, including a program that involved the Waterbury Historical Society. The Vermont Historical Society on Thursday announced that due to the termination of a grant from the Institute of Museum and Library Services, it would lay off a staff member and stop work on a new local history project.

The discovery was made around 6:30 p.m. on Wednesday by someone walking along the river near the Bolton Falls dam, police said. The Waterbury Fire Department assisted troopers with the recovery and the body was taken to the Vermont Chief Medical Examinter’s office in Burlington, police said. An autopsy on Friday so far identified the deceased as John Gaye, age 45, of Essex, police said.

Vermont State Police are investigating the theft of two vehicles from a property management company in Waterbury on Saturday. Sgt. William Warner at the Berlin barracks said state police received a report shortly after 8:30 on Sunday morning about a vehicle theft from Stromme Properties on Railroad Street, a property management company. “During the investigation, it was learned another vehicle had been taken from the same site,” Warner noted in his press release.
