In the eight months since B.C. started offering free contraception and letting pharmacists treat minor ailments, the province says many have taken advantage of the programs. North Vancouver NDP MLA Susie Chant, who is also a nurse, says between April 1 and Nov. 28, 2023, more than 188,000 people received free contraceptives. "Over 123,000 people received hormonal pill contraceptives, 37,300 people obtained emergency pills, and over 30,000 people received an IUD," she adds.

The B.C. government has ended the latest legislative session in Victoria with a slew of new legislation intended to increase housing. But that has also come with a slew of opposition complaints, with some claiming the housing supply bills have been rushed without adequate feedback. Housing Minister Ravi Kahlon was unapologetic Thursday about the content or the timing of the bills.

As the saga over Surrey's police transition to a municipal force drags on, B.C.'s premier is making it clear the province is not offering any additional money to help with it. David Eby said Monday that the $150 million initially offered to the city to help continue its transition to the Surrey Police Service (SPS) will be all that there is. "There's $150 million on the table that Surrey hasn't taken us up on. They have a surplus in their policing budget. They have a surplus overall.

Some Jewish parents in Vancouver will be keeping their kids home from school on Friday amid an increase in threatening social media posts against the community. Among those is Gabe Garfinkel, who says he's received an email detailing a message from the terrorist group Hamas calling for a worldwide "general mobilization" against Jewish people on Oct. 13. While he's not sure how valid the threats are locally, he tells CityNews he's not taking any chances.
