Boone Police hired their first social worker to work with the department in September. The goal is to decrease the amount of officer interactions and allow easier access to resources for those who need them. “If I’m on call and I see somebody that is a bigger project than I can take on, mental illness or homeless, I can make a phone call and have someone there that’s an expert on this and I’m certainly not,” said Jonathan Houck, a lieutenant of the police department.

State law mandates that no voter should be turned away and no person shall be denied the option to vote using a provisional ballot. “It’s fail-safe voting that allows people to vote then allows us to verify their eligibility after Election Day,” said Matthew Snyder, director of the Watauga County Board of Elections. According to the North Carolina State Board of Elections website, a provisional ballot is used when a voter’s qualifications and eligibility are questioned.

The process and transition from college to the workforce can raise questions about applying for jobs and having a good resume. Ask a Mountaineer is a website, launched in August 2023, for students and alumni to ask questions to other alumni about their networking and career development. “We wanted to find a way that we could help support students as they are going out into the workforce,” said Savannah Stanbery, assistant director of alumni affairs.

Homecoming week is off to a running start after the annual ‘Neerly Naked Mile. The entrance of the Plemmons Student Union was bustling with people wearing bathing suits, short shorts and a Grinch costume to start the event. “The point is to represent the idea of somebody not having enough clothing to sustain the winter,” said Molly McLauchlan, the ‘Neerly Naked Mile coordinator. People climbed trees to get a better look at the leg power tearing through campus.

Audrey Guyler, a junior molecular biology major and founder of Women in STEM, said clubs are where you can find support and a community beyond the classroom. “It’s important to have groups of people with like-interests to support each other,” Guyler said. There are over 400 clubs on campus and at least three to four clubs are chartered each week, according to Gretchen Cross, a senior communication studies major and lead involvement assistant in the Club Hub.
