GENEVA — Twenty concerts, nine venues, four days and one city. That’s the tagline for the second annual Rocco Scott LaFaro-Geneva Jazz Festival 2024 that Michael Gonzalez and the Finger Lakes Independent Music Association are putting together the weekend preceding the solar eclipse. The festival itself was conceived by Gonzalez, a local musician, and Janelle Bradshaw, who plays trumpet and runs the blog FLXMusic247.com.

CANANDAIGUA — Sophia Johnson of Canandaigua earned a place on Furman University's dean's list for the 2023 fall semester. Furman's dean's list is composed of full-time undergraduate students who earn a grade point average of 3.4 or higher on a four-point system. Johnson's parents and/or guardians are Kyle Johnson and Jennifer Johnson. Furman College is in Greenville, S.C.
Corning Community College to host “Chem Bowl” May 10

CORNING — Corning Community College will host the 45th annual Chem Bowl 2024 on May 10 on the college’s main campus on Spencer Hill from 4-8 p.m. It marks the first time the competition will be held since 2019 due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Chem Bowl is an open competition for high school science students to compete in a chemistry-based quiz event.

A few months ago, I think my mother-in-law Vada finally accepted that she was really 92, not 82 as she had insisted for a while, blaming it on that new math. I don’t know if it was that she couldn’t fathom actually living that long, surviving the deaths of her daughter, dear cousins and friends, or if she truly believed that she was 10 years younger than she was, which she would tell everyone when I shared her age. My daughter-in-law doesn’t know what she’s talking about, she used to say.

CLYDE — Stress. That’s the reason Clyde-Savannah Board of Education President Pam Anstee gave after submitting her resignation following the board’s March 13 meeting. Anstee served on the board for seven years. “It’s no secret I have health issues,” Anstee said in a telephone conversation with the Finger Lakes Times Monday, “and, this past year, it’s been one stressful situation after another.”Anstee said she is diabetic and has high blood pressure.

It was a top concern Wednesday at the Clyde-Savannah school board meeting, during Assistant Superintendent for Business Susan Gray’s discussion of the administrative part of the anticipated 2024-25 school budget.
