Born at home in Distant on December 11, 1929, she was a daughter of the late Walter “Mike” Guthrie and Florence Allen Guthrie. Minnie was a graduate of the New Bethlehem High School. She married the late Marlin R. “Smick” Smail Jr. on Dec. 12, 1948. He preceded her in death on May 25, 2014. Minnie loved cooking, baking, housekeeping and spending time with her family.

    Hazel E. Gaston, 80, of Green Valley Road, Brookville, died on Friday, June 20, 2025 at Penn Highlands Jefferson Manor in Brookville. Born December 2, 1944 in Ridgway, she was the daughter of the late Irvin and Elizabeth (Vandervort) Deemer. Although from the same hometown, it was only after moving to Chicago, Ill. following high school graduation that Hazel met the love of her life, Joseph Gaston.

    Joyce M. Grant, 87, of DuBois, passed away on Tuesday, June 24, 2025, at McKinnley Health Center in Brookville. Born December 4, 1937, in DuBois, she was the daughter of the late Clarence E. and Stella Pearl Shaffer. Joyce graduated from Sandy High School, worked at BF Goodrich, made golf balls and cleaned various businesses in the DuBois area. On June 8, 1959, she married Willis “John” Grant, in DuBois, together they enjoyed 58 years of marriage until his passing on October 29, 2017.
