Norwalk Public Schools (NPS) has opened 50 seats at its three Open Choice inter-district magnet schools for students from five neighboring towns. Students in Darien, New Canaan, Weston, Westport and Wilton can now apply to attend Norwalk Public Schools’ Open Choice magnet schools through Cooperative Educational Services.

The SoNo Collection, one of the largest taxpayers in Norwalk, is appealing its new assessed value after the latest property revaluation from the city. As a part of the 2023 revaluation, the city found the appraised value of the property, located at 100–101 North Water Street, to be $224,956,130 and its assessed value, or 70% of that, to be $157,469,290. The assessed value is what the property owner pays taxes on.

Friday marked the beginning of the 110th Celebration of the St. Ann Feast at Norwalk’s St. Ann Club that will continue through Sunday evening. “La Festa di Sant’Anna” is a celebration of Italian heritage and a tradition honoring St Ann and St Joachim, the parents of the Virgin Mary and the grandparents of Jesus in the Catholic tradition. Originating in and enjoyed widely across Italy, the holiday came over with the mass migration of Italians in the early 20th Century.

The Norwalk Crush 8U softball team won the Babe Ruth State Championship on Sunday in Stamford. It is the first state championship for a Norwalk youth travel softball program in its history, according to Shannon O’Toole Giandurco, who submitted a photo of the championship team. The girls went 4-1 in the double elimination tournament and beat the 3-time defending champion Stamford Stars Red twice to take the title at Cove Island Park.

One-third of Norwalk households are paying more than 30 percent of their incomes on housing, the Affordable Housing Plan Advisory Committee learned Monday, when it met to discuss key findings from a consultant’s state-mandated report on the city’s housing needs. Kevin Dwarka, a land use and economic consultant who is working with Allee King Rosen & Fleming on an affordable housing plan, also said homeownership rates have fallen from 65 percent to 55 percent over the last 10 years.

The Connecticut insurance department is again considering annual rate hikes for state-regulated health plans on and off the insurance exchange. Insurers are seeking an average increase of 8.3% on 2025 individual plans and 11.9% on small group policies. The proposed hikes are lower than what was requested the last two years, but similar to those sought in 2021. Last year, insurers asked for an average rate increase of 12.4% on individual plans and 14.8% on small group.

After a tough budget season, the Board of Estimate and Taxation approved a 2.39% increase in the city’s budget and a 3% increase in the Board of Education’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The 3% increase equates to a $233,360,344 budget for the school district, significantly lower than the $245,087,744 proposed budget approved by the Board of Education. The proposed budget was an 8.2% increase over last year.
