The state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection (DEEP), sidestepping local concerns, has approved Eversource’s proposal to relocate two high-voltage power lines by drilling conduits beneath Norwalk Harbor. The decision was greeted with dismay at a meeting of the Norwalk Harbor Management Commission, where some members said DEEP hadn’t considered or even acknowledged its concerns in approving the plan.

After a tough budget season, the Board of Estimate and Taxation approved a 2.39% increase in the city’s budget and a 3% increase in the Board of Education’s budget for the upcoming fiscal year. The 3% increase equates to a $233,360,344 budget for the school district, significantly lower than the $245,087,744 proposed budget approved by the Board of Education. The proposed budget was an 8.2% increase over last year.

The Norwalk Board of Education voted unanimously to approve Jennifer Sweeters as the new principal of Kendall College and Career Academy, also referred to as Kendall Elementary School. “Jennifer Sweeters has dedicated many, many years of her life to the children of Norwalk Public Schools and has been extremely flexible when needed to be in different situations throughout the district,” Superintendent Alexandra Estrella told the Board of Education at its May 21 meeting.

Every two years, Norwalk holds a municipal election. And every two years, the results are pretty much the same: Democrats sweep virtually everything of significance. Last November, Democrats retained control of the Mayor’s office, maintained a 15-to-1 majority on the Common Council, and a 9-to-0 majority on the Board of Education. For the record: I’m a Democrat. Between 1997 and 2019, I served 14 years on the Norwalk Common Council and six years on its BOE.
